“Play it Forward is the future model of taking federal oversights into the hands of the people. It is a selfless philanthropic endeavor that only benefits children and the arts.”– Devon Allman, recording artist/musician/producer
Since the inception of Play It Forward Saint Louis in 2006, countless instruments have been donated to school music programs. PIF was founded with the specific purpose of donating to school music programs; the organization has since expanded its outreach to include children in social services, foster care organizations, and terminally ill children in hospitals who could most benefit from music therapy.
In 2014, Play It Forward received its 501(c)(3) status and the grass-roots efforts continue; most of our support comes from our community. Getting pre-loved instruments into local music programs will always be our goal.
The Nashville chapter of Play It Forward aims to provide musical instruments and artistic opportunities to underfunded music programs in public schools, off campus music programs, and any child with a desire to play an instrument.
With continued education budget cuts, there is much more work ahead to keep music alive in our schools. Envision a once flourishing school music program that had their budget cut for the third year in a row and can no longer afford to fix their broken instruments, or purchase the instruments that they desperately need. Imagine how their music program flourishes when they are given the needed instruments and tools. Play It Forward has been successful in doing just that!
Studies are conclusive that a child who learns to play an instrument performs better in school. Music education helps develop language and reasoning, it increases coordination, and provides a sense of achievement. Kids engaged in music programs learn to work well with others and achieve higher test scores on both the ACT and SAT standardized tests. It’s not rocket science… it’s music.
Play It Forward seeks partnerships with artists and individuals as the organization needs funds for instruments as well as repairs. Donations from locally known and respected businesses, as well as individual donors, will not only keep the flow of these instruments in our local schools, it will also improve the effectiveness of Play It Forward’s purchasing power, marketing, and expansion abilities. Additional funds will allow them to reach additional supporters and gain more sponsorship, as well as build a stronger and more viable future for music education in Nashville.
